Stop Warrantless Mass Surveillance in Colorado!

Throughout Colorado and across the United States, tens of thousands of Automatic License Plate Readers (ALPRs) are surveilling the public roadways.

These systems don’t just capture license plates, but also a vehicle’s make, model, color and even details like dents, scratches, and bumper stickers. This info is often funneled into centralized, searchable databases that can be accessed and shared (even across state lines) with little oversight.

No law-abiding Coloradan should have to worry that the government is monitoring them when they drive to visit friends and family, to attend their place of worship, to see a doctor, to consult an attorney, or to participate in a political rally. Yet, without strict guardrails for surveillance technology like ALPRs, that’s increasingly the case.

We are working in collaboration with groups across Colorado to support Senator Judy Amabile’s efforts to pass robust regulations for this powerful surveillance technology.

This includes:

  • A warrant requirement
  • A limit on how long data can be retained
  • A restriction on sharing data outside of Colorado
  • Auditing, transparency, and accountability requirements

While SB26-070 didn’t pass last session, Colorado will have another chance to get this legislation over the finish line in 2027. But for that to happen, we need your help!

Regulate License Plate Readers!

It’s time to regulate Automatic License Plate Readers (ALPRs)! Across Colorado, this largely unregulated mass surveillance technology collects detailed information on individuals and motorists, many of whom have never been suspected of committing a crime.

Sen. Amabile’s bill will create robust statewide regulations for ALPRs and other surveillance technology. For this bill to pass in 2027, it needs your help.
